Calm Spa Bangkok:

Sculptural Lighting for an Urban Wellness Interior

Calm Spa Ari is an urban spa in Bangkok designed by Begray Bangkok, led by Jakarin Aksravadeewat, and completed in 2018. Set among the greenery of Ari, the interior combines soft pastel tones, natural materials and carefully composed lighting to create a quiet transition from the surrounding city.

The project features four handcrafted Ango lighting designs

  • Unit Pendant-M

  • Unit Pendant-R

  • Double Orbit

  • Firmament-1 Gold.

Made from mulberry tree bark, superfine rattan and handworked metal, each design brings a different quality of light and material expression to the interior.

A Material-Led Lighting Concept

Rather than applying uniform lighting throughout the spa, Begray Bangkok selected individual pieces in response to the atmosphere and architectural character of each area.

Mulberry tree bark gently filters illumination through its fibrous surface, creating a soft, diffused glow. Superfine rattan allows light to pass through its open weave, producing subtle patterns of texture and shadow. The multifaceted surfaces of handworked metal reflect light and respond to movement through the space.

Together, these materials establish a visual progression—from the quiet illumination of the reception and treatment rooms to more expressive sculptural moments within the interior and staircase.

Unit Pendant-M:

Soft Light for Reception & Treatment Rooms

Material expression:

Mulberry tree bark softly filters the light

Role in the interior:

Creates a gentle transition from reception to treatment spaces

Unit Pendant-M was selected for the reception area and treatment rooms, establishing the spa’s material character from the moment guests enter.

Handcrafted from natural mulberry tree bark, its softly textured diffuser filters the light while retaining the visible fibres and irregularities of the material. In the reception area, the pendant complements the pastel interior and surrounding greenery, helping to create a gradual transition from the urban exterior into a quieter environment.

Within the treatment rooms, Unit Pendant-M introduces warm illumination and organic texture without becoming visually dominant. Its restrained presence allows the pendant to support the interior architecture rather than compete with it.

Unit Pendant-R:

Superfine Rattan and Patterned Shadow

Material expression:

Random-woven superfine rattan casts delicate patterns of light and shadow

Role in the interior:

Adds visual depth to a private treatment room

Its stripped-back sculptural form evokes a flattened sphere or miniature world. The pendant is handcrafted using superfine rattan arranged in an expressive random weave, giving every piece its own subtle character.

When worked into such a fine structure, rattan offers excellent light translucency and reflectivity. Illumination passes through the open weave, creating gentle variations of brightness, texture, and shadow across the surrounding space.

The Unit Pendant-R feels light & delicate, making it particularly suited to an interior designed for rest and restoration. Its natural material introduces warmth, while its sculptural construction adds a contemporary dimension to the treat- ment room.

Double Orbit:

A Suspended Architectural Gesture

Material expression: Interlocking rattan rings form an open sculptural composition

Role in the interior: Introduces an architectural focal point without visual heaviness

Part of Ango’s Continuity Series, Double Orbit is formed from two interlocking rings of finely worked rattan.

The intersecting forms create a sense of movement and continuity, changing in composition when viewed from different positions. Its generous scale gives the installation an architectural presence, while the open rattan structure allows it to remain visually light within the space.

In contrast to the quieter pendant lights used in the treatment rooms, Double Orbit creates a more recognisable sculptural moment without separating itself from the project’s natural material palette.

Firmament-1 Gold:

Reflection & Movement on the Staircase

Material expression: Multifaceted handworked metal produces shifting highlights

Role in the interior: Animates the staircase as guests move between levels

Firmament-1 Gold was selected as a focal point for the staircase.

Its multifaceted metal structure refracts and reflects light, producing shifting highlights as guests move between levels. The gold finish adds warmth and a restrained sense of richness while remaining connected to the softer illumination found throughout the spa.

By positioning Firmament-1 Gold within a transitional area, the design gives the staircase its own visual identity and turns circulation through the building into part of the spatial experience.

Contemporary Thai Craft in a Bangkok Spa Interior

Designed and handcrafted in Bangkok, Ango’s lighting introduces contemporary Thai material knowledge into Calm Spa Ari without relying on traditional decorative motifs.

Its identity emerges through the transformation of natural materials and specialist techniques: mulberry bark formed into a light-diffusing surface, superfine rattan developed into open sculptural structures, and metal worked by hand to shape reflection and movement.

Variations in fibre, weave and surface retain evidence of the human process behind each object. These subtle irregularities bring warmth and individuality to the contemporary spa interior while creating a direct relationship between craftsmanship, material and light.

Calm Spa Ari demonstrates how sculptural lighting can become part of an architectural sequence. Each Ango design responds to a particular setting, yet the four installations remain connected through natural materials, handcrafted surfaces and a carefully controlled quality of illumination.
